The Forged in Fire North American Tour made a stop at the Showbox Sodo in Seattle. The cold winter evening did not stop the many metalheads who made their way out to experience an awesome evening of great heavy metal, compliments of Sweden’s In Flames and Dallas’ Hellyeah.
In Flames, which is made up of vocalist Anders Friden, guitarists Bjorn Gelotte and Niclas Engelin, bassist Peter Iwers, and drummer Joe Rickard, are touring in support of their latest release, Battles. With the crowd growing impatient, and chanting “In Flames!” the band opened with “Bullet Ride”. The band sounded exceptional and they proved that they are much on top of their game. The band then jumped into the melodic “Where the Dead Ships Dwell”. Friden was busy moving around on stage and interacting with his band mates as well as doing a great job at getting the crowd involved with singing along with him. Gelotte and Engelin are an exceptional guitar duo, trading riff for riff as they launched into fan favorites “Leeches”, “The End”, “Alias” as well as getting the crowd heavily involved with “Only for the Weak”.
Friden spent some time in between songs joking with the crowd, introducing members of the band, explaining that this was Rickard’s first tour with the band and that this was to be Iwers last. The band then played with intensity and the crowd showed their appreciation by crowd surfing and forming a large pit when the band proceeded to play “Cloud Connected”, “The Truth”, “Thru Oblivion” and finishing out their set with “Take This Life”. Though their set clocked in just a little over an hour, In Flames provided the Seattle crowd with a solid performance that left everyone happy and wanting more.
Hellyeah, who is touring on the strength of their latest release, Unden!able, also performed a rock solid hour long set that captured the energy of the crowd. As the intro pumped through the PA system, legendary drummer Vinnie Paul could be seen from behind his large drum kit, waving his arms getting the crowd pumped up. As he pounded the opening beat, the rest of the band, front man Chad Grey, guitarists Tom Maxwell and Christian Brady, along with bassist Kyle Sanders, launched into “X”. As Grey was literally jumping around on stage and off of the drum riser, the band tore into “Demons in the Dirt”, “Blood for Blood”, and “Moth”. Grey thanked the crowd for coming out on a school night, and was happy to see many people in attendance who were there to get their heavy metal fix.
As the band continued their assault on the senses, one of the highlights and surprises of the evening was the band’s rendition of Phil Collins’ “I Don’t Care Anymore”, which had many a fan in the crowd singing along. The band then finished their amazing set, which also clocked in at an hour, with their anthem “Hellyeah” as the members of the crowd opened up a larger circle pit, much to the joy of the band.
Getting the evening started was metal band Source, who are based out of Boulder, CO.
