LIVE REVIEW – Big Ass Boombox Fest 2015

LIVE REVIEW – Big Ass Boombox Fest 2015

New year, more rain and the first Seattle music Festival of the year, Big Ass Boombox fest 2015!! The event took place over two venues, The Crocodile (The main stage and front stage) and the 2312 gallery in the Belltown district. Best thing about this event other than music, it’s all free!!!

Favorite bands

Detective agency who played on the front stage were amazing. There sound is very reminiscent of The Strokes but with more energy in their music. The vocals sounded great especially the low tones of the lead singer, Nate Kruz, mixed with Amy Jean, guitar player, vocals backing him up. The combination of the vocals really added a unique distinction to every song. Every song had strong hooks, with great guitar work that brought out the strong melodies of the songs. The song, Changes, comes in with a great intro of the guitar then dives right into the catchy verse that will stay stuck in your head for days. I really felt they should had been on the main stage, they were that good. They will be starting to record a new album soon at the great BLDG Studios in Seattle.

2312 gallery is a great venue (actually a art gallery but should be used more often for music), where the bands had the pleasure to perform around some inspiring art. The band Supply and the Man is a group who has a great future ahead of them. They played with a strong passion and were recklessness in their music that is reminiscent to the early gundge days. I give them credit for really being up front, especially when they claimed their performance would be a moment to remember forever. I feel there mix of indie, gundge and punk really adds to their uniqueness. Best song, Rabbit Hole and Monsters are real, are edgy, are dirty and very distinct. Their sound is very distinct or whatever you want to call their sound, it had everyone moving and screaming.

Ka, a band that really surprised me at how good they played. I actually considered leaving to go watch another band but once I heard this group, I was hooked to them. They really embrace that dark wave and doom rock sound. The lead singer, Alexander Barr, sang with a low tone through the verses but in the chorus of songs, is not afraid to let out a emotional, powerful scream. The bass player, John O’conner, plays with heavy distortion through all the songs which allowed him to carry the melodies throughout. I never get tired of watching drummers tear into their drums and this drummer, Kendra Cox, was no exception. She hit the drums with force and conviction through every single beat. This is a band that does not have a album out yet, but hopefully soon!!!

Brandon Daniel and Chic, has been around the scene, but I have never been disappointed with any of their performances. They played with a reckless abandonment that very few bands can pull off without sounding bad. The singer, Brandon Daniel, performs with great energy in every song and he is not afraid to make sure the crowd is into the band. The song, In Light, was my favorite song. It starts with an amazing intro that builds towards the thunderous drums. They always know how to build up the songs energy perfectly. Go check this band out while you still can on the small stages!!!

This is an event that really shows how much the Northwest communities love music. The workers were all volunteers, plus they gave a free sampler that included most of the bands. Free music, great venues and Downtown Seattle. A great way to start the New Year in the Northwest!!!
