Sarah West Forever: Benefit Concert HoboSexual and The Femurs

This was no normal show, this was a benefit concert at The LoFi for Sarah West who recently past away. This was a show where people could celebrate the life of Sarah West who was a booker for a lot of bands in the early 2000s and helped so many bands get their start.

FullSizeRender-3The first band was the Femurs, lead by Rob Femur. They had the drummer of the Blakes, Bob Husak, fill in for drums. They played with an old school, punk rock intensity that seems harder to find these days. I loved how they had the whole crowd bouncing and dancing to every song. They ended their set with Sarah West’s favorite song, Plastic Sword, where Rob Femur added the perfect lyric for the occasion, ” Sarah West will be watching us from above.”

This show as far as bands, belonged to Hobosexual. Their raw blues, heavy guitar driven rock was amazing. The duo performed with a intensity that had everyone moshing throughout their performance. The singer Ben Harwood sang with an almost angry but definitely fierce attitude that had the crowd head-banging to every song. The drummer Jeff Silva played with a thunderous bass kick that shook the floor with every hit. During their last song, Concrete Corporate, Ben Harwood tore through a 5 minute solo which was absolutely amazing. Ben Harwood made the guitar sing notes that most guitar players have never heard of let alone know how to play. He played the guitar on the stage, on the floor with the crowd standing over him, and finally finished by using his guitar pedal as a slide to make some mindblowing sounds. This is a band that must be seen by any rock fan.

The bands were great but this show was about a individual who loved the Seattle music scene. She devoted her career toward Seattle music. I heard so many amazing stories about how she took chances on bands when others did not. This is an individual who should be an inspiration for us all. We should be proud to have such an amazing music scene. All it takes is one band, one individual that believes in what they do to make an impact on this music scene. Sarah West believed in the greatness of Seattle music, and it’s up to all us to carry it on.
