Sons of Revelry Frontman Toby Black has been jamming and practicing his ass off

Seattle Sound Live has an in depth interview describing Sons of Revelry’s dream come true with the amazing fate of landing a spot on the 2014 Rockstar Energy Uproar Tour. Sons of Revelry is Toby Black – Lead Vocal/Lead Guitar Corey Brouwer – Back up Vocals/Rhythm Guitar Arron Rayner – Bass Guitar Sean Boyle – Drums Hometown of Brantford Ontario   “After spending a year solidifying their reputation as true blue local heroes, the Brantford, Ontario rock and roll quartet’s hard work, discipline and sacrificial commitment to fulfill their objectives has paid off – big time”. Sons of Revelry found out that they had won the chance to perform at the prestigious Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival at Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre as part of the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands and they won, which brings the band to the United States for the 2014 Rockstar Energy UPROAR festival. SSL – Hi Toby, How are you? I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to talk to Seattle Sound Live.

Toby – I am excellent how are you?

SSL – I’m good, I love your accent (Scottish) by the way

Toby – Cheers!

SSL – So, let’s jump right in, 1st off less than a year together as a band, you successfully won a spot in the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands in 2013 guaranteeing you a position for the 2014 Uproar tour?

Toby – That’s right

SSL – What was this experience for you like?

Toby – Yeah, I mean the fact that we have done anything within a year of being a band is pretty amazing but, to have done and what we are doing is kind of hard to describe to be honest. We hear from a lot of professionals and legendary people in the industry that bands really don’t get good until 3-4 years together, so we are kind of excited to see where we are going to be in the next few years which will be fun. But, Ernie Ball and the guys from Energy, Jay Baumgardner and Pearl and the UPROAR tour has just been amazing, they have been all so awesome to us and have been really helpful in developing us really quickly. We have been recording our EP down there (Hollywood) with Jay, that was just revolutionary for us and kind of grew a whole new way of thinking when it comes to our music and how we play. It just raised the bar for us. So, it truly has been a life changing experience for us going to Hollywood and now going on this tour and thanks to Ernie Ball for playing a couple of Warped tours dates up here in Canada.

SSL – Yeah, it sounds like a dream come true, it’s not that easy to do what you have in such a short amount of time.

Toby – No, it’s not easy to do in any amount of time, In the Ernie Ball Uproar Battle of the Bands we were going up against bands that have been around for 3 to 6 and some 10 years, it’s tough to do in any length of time but, I think one of the reasons is that our songs are doing so well, is that our songs are not written like anything or sound like anyone else, its 100% natural, it’s basically every song you hear is Sons of Reverly stripped down at its best or its worst. It’s basically us healing through our music so, its honest, its genuine and I think people totally reciprocate with that and they can hear it. I think that is one of the main reasons why we are doing so well so quickly is because, we are actually genuine dudes that are going through the struggles of life and writing about it and sharing it with people.

SSL – I agree, I noticed you guys are playing hard in the Toronto and Canada area is this going to be your 1st United States tour?

Toby – Yes, this is actually going to be our first tour period (laughing) we have done a few Warped tours up here during the summer thanks to Ernie Ball and we did a media tour playing some radio and T.V. shows acoustically months ago. But, this is our first actual U.S tour together as a band, we are just incredibly stoked. We are really developing a following all across North America and the world. We are just excited to get into the market and speak to the people and have a good time with new fans, with all these new people we meet in all these different places.

SSL – Yeah, It sounds like an amazing gig you got going on.

Toby – (Laughing) Yeah, we couldn’t be happier.

SSL – So, are you doing anything special to prepare for the Uproar festival?

Toby – We have been , knowing the set inside and out, we did a big fundraiser support show launch last month here in Canada and we are doing a sendoff show here locally tomorrow night and pretty much spend as much time here with family, I have a 7 month old little girl and Arron has a 8yr old boy so, we have been trying to fill up on the love bank and the family bank so when we get out there we are in the right mindset for producing and executing what we have to offer.

SSL – I seen your Facebook page and your little girl, she is adorable and has some sweet cheeks on her and featured in your media plug in’s?

Toby – (laughing) Yeah, she takes after her daddy, we actually made a video, we are doing a pledge music campaign to raise money for the tour and the next record and we featured my daughter in that, she was a good cameo role, we are using her cuteness.

SSL – Aww, that’s sweet, I think I seen somewhere that mentioned that you will have an album released in time for Uproar?

Toby – Yes, we will have the EP that we recorded with Jay Baumgardner at NRG studios thanks to Ernie Ball and the Uproar Battle of the Bands.

SSL – Yes, the one you did in Hollywood?

Toby – Yes, the one we did in Hollywood will be released and since Jay and NRG studios was so impressed and really dug our music, they extended an offer to continue to work with us. We have plans to do a full length with them before the end of the year, another dream come true to not only have the people of Jay Baumgardner stature and NRG studios loving what you’re doing.

SSL – So, the full length will be released next year?

Toby – I would assume it’s all up in the air and as quickly as we can make things happen, I would assume the later part of this year or early next year.

SSL – Wow, that is amazing.

Toby – It’s pretty awesome, I can’t wait to actually learn different things and get more educated in singing, performing and playing my guitar just to see how far we can go with it.

SSL – Yeah, I am in shock and awe, it’s just amazing how far you have come in such a short amount of time. Did you just wake up one day and decide you wanted to be in a band?

Toby – (laughing) Ya, I have been playing my acoustic and writing songs and what not and then I decided to pick up an electric guitar two years ago and started fiddling around. I knew that the songs needed to be performed by a full band to do them justice. I started asking around locally if anybody knew any musicians that wanted to jam, and Arron the bass player that works for UPS was delivering a package in this local music store walked in while I was there and the rest is history.

SSL – Amazing, simply amazing. SSL – Do you have any advice to give to aspiring musicians?

Toby – Stay true to yourself, In our year and two months of existence, we have had a lot of people come on board and try to give us direction and a lot of the time they came with good intentions but, it just dilutes what you’re doing, as long as what you got going on is authentic and you feel it and it is filled with love and it’s about emotion everything else will fall into place, keep doing what you are doing and gigs will come, at the end of the day you have to enjoy what you are doing, you have to stay true to what you are doing being authentic, genuine and being yourself, don’t try to be all these different things that people might try to tell you to be, see or look. As long, as you stay true to yourself and genuine and your songs are about emotional things and how you see life than you can’t go wrong.

SSL – That sounds like good advice, Thank you, I think this concludes our time and thank you once again for taking the time to talk to me and Seattle Sound Live, I wish you the best of luck and enormous success. It was a pleasure talking to you and I will see you at the show.

Toby – Thank you very much, have a great day.

It just encompassed us as a band, that passion and that kind of cleansing in a way, it brought us out and there is a song called “Seattle Rain” that we feel that could not have been written if we had not gone to Seattle to do this record
